10 Jan MICHELLE + CAM IN DAHLIA
How did you two meet?
We met a lifetime ago. I was young and working in the city. Cam was working across the road. We made eye contact and maintained daily neighbourly waves for weeks from afar. I finally got impatient and went over to make the first move. But Cam beat me to the punch and asked me out then.
When did you know he was the one?
I kinda knew from our very first date. I can’t really pinpoint what it was. You know how people always say, “when you know, you know”. It’s true!
Who proposed and how did it go down?
Cam proposed on a beautiful weekend away, on the beach in Jervis Bay. After 10 years together, every time you plan a holiday away people ask if it’s finally going to happen. All my girlfriends were convinced this was it, and persuaded me to buy a new outfit and get a manicure just in case.
We stayed at the beautiful Bannister’s in Mollymook and had dinner reservations booked at Rick Stein’s Restaurant. Cam was a total jitter bug during dinner, really nervous, staring into the distance, which had me convinced it was definitely happening that night. Well, it didn’t. So I forgot about the whole thing for the rest of the weekend.
On the last day, we stopped into Jervis Bay on our way home to Sydney. We bought some country pies and a bottle of prosecco for a picnic lunch on the beach. As we were packing up to leave, Cam asked me to put his wallet in my bag, and as I turned back around…there he was on his knees.
Tell us the story of how you fell in love with your GBN dress?
Honestly, I felt so much pressure to find the perfect dress. I tried on so many before finding the Dahlia. I knew that I wanted something simple, effortless and comfortable. But by the end of my search, I was quickly running out of time. When I tried on Dahlia at Savvy Brides in Sydney, I actually bought it on impulse because if I didn’t get a dress soon, I would be getting married with no dress! Not overthinking it was actually the best decision I made, because in the end I found a dress that was just…me.
What was the wedding theme/style for your special day?
A relaxed, tropical coastal wedding. Tropical greens and whites bringing a clean, fresh and modern vibe with blush and nude tones adding a romantic edge.
On your wedding day, what was the moment that made you cry the most / What was the moment that made you laugh the most?
Cam and I wrote personalised cards to each other on the day, to read in private before all the craziness started. On his card to me, the cover said “all of me, loves all of you” and inside the card, the final words were “you’re my end and my beginning, even when I lose I’m winning”. He always sang that song to me so that moment brought me to tears.
We laughed the most through my best friend’s speech. It was so light-hearted and funny, it had everyone in stitches. He shared 5 bits of wisdom to take into married life…
“Now I would like to share with Cam & Michelle five bits of wisdom that I found on the internet.
Number 1. NEVER go to bed on an argument. Always stay up and argue.
Number 2. The best way to remember your anniversary is to forget it once.
Number 3. Always remember these 3 little words, “You’re right dear.”
Number 4. In times of trouble, remember these helpful words from Oscar Wilde, “Women are meant to be loved, not understood.”
Number 5. All you couples here today please turn and face each other and stare deeply into each other’s eyes. Now statistically, you are staring at the person who is most likely to murder you.”
Any advice for future brides?
It sounds very cliche, but try to be present and enjoy the moment on the day. You will be pulled in so many different directions that it will be easy to become overwhelmed. The whole year (or however long you have to plan the wedding) culminates in this one day, so take the time at your reception to sit back and just take it all in. All the love in the room is because of you and your new Husband!
My other tip is, always have a 2nd dress to change into! Even if it’s a really affordable cocktail dress. My wedding day was hot and sunny all day, up until 15 minutes before I was due to be picked up for the ceremony. It started bucketing down with rain. We waited out the storm, but I still had to walk down a very wet aisle and my dress was soaked and stained by the end! If I didn’t have another dress to change into, I would have been devastated. So be prepared for an outfit change, you never know what can happen on the day.
